Sweden bolsters support for Ukraine’s long-range capabilities

In its biggest-yet military aid package for Ukraine, NATO's newest member doubles down on European security.

Ukraine is set to receive SEK1 billion (USD92.7 million) in military aid from Sweden to bolster its long-range capabilities.

The SEK1 billion will specifically support the “production of Ukrainian long-range missiles and long-range drones”, the Swedish Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 30 January.

“It is yet to soon to speak of specific weapon types, timetables and companies, as contracts will need to be worked out and finalised”, an MoD spokesperson told DSEI when asked to elaborate on the deal.

This support forms part of Sweden’s latest SEK13.5 billion (USD92 million) military assistance package to Ukraine. As of February, this will be Sweden’s eighteenth package to Ukraine – the largest to date – bringing its total contributions since 2022 to SEK61.9 billion (USD5.6 billion).

The Nordic country is both investing in Ukrainian industry and donating domestic equipment on its behalf, with a focus on ‘rapid’ deployment. As part of this and its efforts to support Ukraine’s long-range capabilities, Sweden will adopt a financing approach similar to Denmark's known as the ‘Danish model’, the spokesperson explained.

The Danish model essentially involves Ukraine sending its allies a list of projects that it requires financing. Experts from the respective country then evaluate the projects against recommended companies based on their capabilities and experience in fulfilling contracts

The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has credited the Danish model with providing equipment worth EUR538 million (USD556 million) in 2024.

“By strengthening Ukraine’s long-range abilities through the Danish initiative, we also contribute to building a stronger Ukrainian and European defence industrial base. That is vital for sustainability and long-term security”, the spokesperson added.

Alongside long-range platforms, this latest aid package includes the provision of another 16 Combat 90 boats from Saab as well as 146 trucks, 23 naval weapons stations, 1,500 TOW anti-tank missiles, one million rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, 200 armour piercing rounds, and personal protective equipment.
